In The Beginning…
I became hooked on Kumihimo merely by chance. One of my goals at that time was to learn a new craft each quarter, and the second quarter was about to begin; so I thought I would try my hand at jewelry-making.
While visiting a bead store to get some ideas, I noticed a fellow customer wearing a Beaded Kumihimo bracelet she had made a few days earlier. She took the time to explain just how easy it is to do. The shop owner came over to us and casually mentioned that Kumihimo is the ancient Japanese Art of making cords and braids, and from that moment on I was captivated.
Further research about this wonderful art disclosed that the term, “kumihimo”, is a verb with “Kumi” meaning “to braid or to gather together” and “Himo” meaning the word for “cord or “thread”. What a beautiful word and spiritual painting of beauty and strength!
My Beaded Kumihimo Designs
Kumihimo is worked by hand using either a wooden loom or foam disk. You manipulate the threads with your hands on top to form a cord through the hole in the center of the disk. The result is a strong and unbreakable braid that when finished properly, cannot be unraveled.
“Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” (Ecclesiastes 4:12).
I absolutely adore Beaded Kumihimo–in fact you can say I’m addicted to it. The Father creates beauty through me each time a new piece is designed. I have made hundreds of Kumihimo bracelets, necklaces, earrings, key fobs and key rings.
Each one is an original work of art that I will never make again. It is my pleasure to showcase them on this site so that you may be inspired to create original designs yourself and learn to love Japanese braiding.
As each piece is handcrafted, it is continually bathed in prayer while The Holy Spirit whispers to my heart and guides my hands. My joy and awe of The Spirit’s leading are best expressed in the words of a fellow artist, Leonardo Da Vinci, who said, “Where the Spirit does not work with the hands; there is NO ART.”
